THE YEAR WAS 1988. At a time when a gargantuan star-system and absolute mediocrity ruled the roost, one film came in quietly and changed the face of Hindi cinema. 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'. New director, new crew and a new hero - Aamir Khan. In his initial years, Aamir chose some of the worst films everand if he's still in the top rung today, it's all thanks to his undeniable talent. After a stupendous debut, Aamir survived disaster movies like 'Love Love Love', 'Awwal Number' and 'Daulat Kijung'. It was 'Dil* which established his status as a star to reckon with. The film, which also starred Madhuri Dixit, created history at the box-office. But Aamir finally came into his own with 'Dil Hain Ki Maanta Nahin'. That's when he became the Mr. Perfectionist as we all know him today.Mahesh Bhatt was the one who influenced Aamir a great deal. And though today, the actor and the director may not be on talking terms, the fact is that Mahesh gave Aamir a umental hit when he needed it most. 'Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke'. There has often been a debate on who actually directed the film. Reports said that Bhatt lost interest midway during the making of the film and Aamir took over the reigns thereafter. The success of 'HHRPK' also gathers sie-nificance because it was thereon that Aamir began to show keen interest in the actual making of the film. Some directors looked upon this as interference while some called it inspiration. The good thing was that Aamir scored and won both ways. He gave Dharmesh Darshan and Ram Gopal Varma the biggest hits of their careers ('Raja Hindustani' and 'Rangeela'). He gave a fresh lease of life to flop director Vikram Bhatt ('Ghulam'). And for first-timer John Mathew Mathan, he even delivered a blockbuster ('Sarfarosh').On the personal front, even though he's been married since his debut film, the man has an enormous female fan-following. But has Aamir been the loyal hubby throughout? Well, there have been reports linking him with co-stars like Madhuri Dixit, Pooja Bhatt and even Twinkle Khanna. But the hero says it's all hogwash. The last one year has been rather disastrous for the Khan, with all his films bombing at the box-office. 'Mela', '1947-Earth' and 'Mann' have been total losers. Not just that, Aamir is slowly losing goodwill with the directors who gave him his best works. Mansoor Khan and he have parted ways. Mahesh Bhatt doesn't have one good word to say about Aamir anymore. And Ram Gopal Varma has declared that he will not work with the actor. That leaves Aamir with new directors like Ashutosh Gowariker and Farhan Akhtar, whose films he's currently doing. But will the gamble pay off? Can any star in today's times af ford not to work with established banners? Is Aamir becoming too intense for his own good? We hope not. Because he's one star we love to love.
