PHOOL AUR KAANTE AND LAMHE were released on the same day. At the premiere of Ajay Devgan's debut film, star-guest Anil Kapoor told the young actor, "You and your father have done a big mistake by releasing your film on the same day as 'Lamhe1. Your film is bound to suffer."
Three days later, 'Lamhe' was declared to be the biggest flop of all time. While 'Phool Aur Kaante' went on to become one of the biggest grossers of 1991.And with it, a new star wa.s born - Ajay Devgan. At a time when star-sons, superstars and established actors dominated I he industry, here was a young man with no good looks, no godfather, no big banner and no reputed director to spearhead his debut Him. All he had was a lot of ambition, energy and the will to succeed. That's whal made him the superstar that he is today.
The industry took a while to acknowledge his success. But when it did, there was no slopping Ajay. Within two months of his debut film's release, he had signed on a dozen odd films with big makers. One of his films that was under-production when 'PAK' released called "Platform' even had to restructure its entire script, keeping in mind Ajay's new star-status. In his initial years, Ajay established himself firmly as an action hero. That was perhaps the best strategy he could adopt. He knew he didn't have the looks to be a romantic star. So action it was. Perhaps that's the reason why he didn't have much of h female following then. Once he knew he had stabilized himself into the mindsets of movie-goers, he went in for a quiet change.'Ishq' was among the first films in that direction. Then came 'Pvar ToIlona Hi Tha' and its success reaffirmed the fad thai the audience was now ready to see Ajay in varied rules. Incidentally, his co-star in both these movies was K;ijol, who now happens to be his legally-wedded wife.
Ajay, despite his nonchalant attitude, is quite a women's guy. In the industry, his first long-standing relationship was with Kaiisma Kapoor. Ajay was heartbroken when Karisina dumped him due lo emotions presstires from her mother. Then il was reported that he wasseeing Raveena Tandon for some time but it was never confirmed by either of them. After lhat.it was Kajol he got involved with during the making of 'HulchuT. Eventually, they did get married. But there are still whispers of Ajay's closed-door romances with girls like Sonali Benrire and Neha that keep cropping up.Over the years, there has been a remarkable improvement in Ajay as an actor. He has been absolutely consistent in his performances as well. His portrayals in recent films like 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and'Dil Kya Kare' have been particularly outstanding. He even won the National Award for Best Actor in 1997 for his brilliant portrayal in 'Zakhm', But the man is not satisfied just being an actor. A couple of years back, he launched his own distribution concern and is doing well in the business. Now he's all set to launch the public issue of his company in the capital market. There are major forays that Ajay is planning in the
