| ANUPAM KHER brought a certain glamour and respectability to the character actor. Before him, none of the actors playing villain, father or hero's buddy parts got as much media coverage as him - which included a spot of notoriety when he slapped a journalist and initiated an industry-media war. There is no denying that Kher is a talented all-around actor who, when given a role he can sink his teeth into, always comes up with a remarkable performance. wever, his filmography is also littered with a lot of junk films.
The Simla-born Kher, after a spell in the theatre, came to Mumbai to give films a shot. He was immediately noticed in a play 'Desire Under the Elms' with his soon-to-be-wife Kiron Thakur Singh. "After months of struggle, he got a make-or-break role, unfortunately it was that of an old man, in Mahesh Bhatt's 'Saaransh' (1984). In his late twenties, Kher played a 65-year-old man so convincingly that he was loaded with acclaim and awards. The scene in which he gives a minister a piece of his mind and later shames a custom officer for holding up his dead son's ashes, is etched in the minds of audiences.
Before he could get slotted as an old man, Subhash Ghai offered him the part of a villain (Dr. Dang) in 'Karma', where Kher matched his talent with actors
of the calibre of Dilip Kumar, Nutan and Naseeruddin Shah. Later, he also did a comic role in Ghai's 'Ram Lakhan' and a small role in 'Saudagar'.
The association with Mahesh Bhatt and Yash Chopra was the most fruitful, however, and gave him such challenging roles as that of an alcoholic
singer reformed by his daughter in 'Daddy', P Kumar Gaurav's bigamous father in 'Janam', Poqja Bhatt's droll father in 'Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin' and many others in films of the former; and 'Vijay', 'Lamhe', 'Darr', 'Dilwale DulhaniyaLejayenge' (as Shah Rukh Khan's cheerful dad) under Chopra's banner.
In'Chaalbaaz', he played Sridevi's wicked but comical uncle; in 'Dil', he was a nouveau riche upstart; in 'Mast Kalandar' and 'Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge', he played funny, effeminate characters. At the same time, he was a dreaded baddie in films like 'Arjun', 'Nigahen' and 'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja'. In the recent 'Kya Kehna', he was the heroine's supportive father.
He has been part of some of the biggest commercial blockbusters like 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun', 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' and 'Kaho Na Pyar Hai', and at the same time, excelled in offbeat films like 'Rao Saheb', 'Pestonjee' and 'Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa'. No other actor in recent time has been this prolific, versatile and successful. When Kher was at the peak of his career, he slowed down to get involved with a school for handicapped
children, set up a television software and event management company and won plaudits for his performance in Feroz Khan's stage play 'Saalgirah', with his talented wife Kiron Kher playing a couple who depend on each other even after they are divorced. He has also recendy produced Rituparno Ghosh's 'Bariwali' which has been winning awards at international film festivals, and plans to direct a film soon. He will undoubtedly do a good job of it. |
